PRESERVING OUR HISTORIC CHURCH

Our Heritage, Their Future
This vision statement is a long-range restoration and rehabilitation plan for the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown.  It is funded by a Capital Fund which provides monies on a continuing basis for large capital projects.  The plan is based on a Conditions Assessment Report prepared by preservation architect Randy Crawford of Crawford & Stearns, Syracuse, New York.  The Fund evolved from two previous fundraising campaigns for the Church Centennial in 2004 and stained glass window restoration, 2004-2008.

Restoration Projects
The first project to be completed was the restoration of 26 stained glass windows throughout the building by Rohlf’s Stained Studio, Mount Vernon, New York.  Since then, the trustees have been guided by the recommendations in the building conditions report.

Other projects completed to date are:
Subsurface drainage
Sealing and painting interior stained glass window sashes
Refurbishing and repainting exterior window frames on the south and east sides of the building
Replacing the sanctuary roof, gutters and downspouts
Replicating and replacing bell tower front entrance doors
New sidewalk on north side of the building
Replacing roof, gutters and downspouts on the west side

The Capital Fund
The Fund is supported by continuing commitments and contributions that fund some projects outright.  Monies are also used to match grants from public and private sources.  We gratefully acknowledge support from the Scriven Foundation, the New York Landmarks Conservancy, and
First Presbyterian Church of Schoharie Mission Fund.

Pledges and contributions from members and friends are important for growing a fund balance.  Special fundraisers have included the “Heavenly Treasures Auction,” Sacred Sites Concert “Celebrate with Strings,” and baseball weekend car parking.

Our goal is to make the church structurally sound, safe, healthy, and fully accessible for our fellowship, our community, and future generations.

Gifts and Contributions
The Capital Fund is a continuing source of funds for large-scale restoration projects.  Contributions may be given at any time.  Bequests may be designated for general support or special projects.

Pledging on an annual basis is an important means of growing the fund.  Capital Fund envelopes are available on request, in the pew racks, and on the Fellowship Room bulletin board.

A list of priorities and details of current projects are available from the trustees.
